I was standing over a student in the midst of saying something profound when an urge drove my index finger to the first cornrow above my forehead. Two good swipes with my finger and I was good. Except in the moment of friction, I created St. Martin’s first and most likely perfect snowflake.
I was standing over a student in the midst of saying something profound when an urge drove my index finger to the first cornrow above my forehead. Two good swipes with my finger and I was good. Except in the moment of friction, I created St. Martin’s first and most likely perfect snowflake. It was perfect because it cascaded in slow motion from my head, dancing from side to side like an adventure nut in a parachute in the narrow space between myself, the desk and the student. Imagine my horror, when our eyes met and I realized that she was following the descent of my dandruff flake. What made it worst was not that the conversation paused or that she was looking, but that it landed somewhere on her hand. Mind you, her hair was well-oiled and for all the years I knew her, it tapped the seat of her pants. Once in a while, it was a plaything to other female students, whose hair never climb down the plateau past their shoulders. I brushed the fungus flake off. At least I hope I did because I brushed the length of her hand and continued speaking. In my mind, I had two thoughts:
I had to back track. I went through hurricane Irma with a perfectly clean and pliable scalp. And now this. Okay, I was on week two of my protective styling binge. This was the second week my scalp was exposed and the second cornrow style this time around. I'll get to the root of this mystery in How to Get Dandruff at Work pt. 2. I hope to see you then.
