Letter and Essay Writing Competition 2018 St. Maarten
​All fourth year students, girls and boys in primary and secondary schools of both parts of St. Martin, are invited to participate in Don’t Break the Comb’s Letter and Essay Writing Competition. Entries from each school must be submitted in an envelope and delivered to the Philipsburg Jubilee Library, C. Voges Street, Philipsburg, by 5 pm on Tuesday, April 10, 2018.​

Rules & Guidelines

The three prize-winning categories of the competition are:
  • Third-Fifth Grade students in Primary School
    • Each student must submit a 100-150 word letter, hand-written in English, on the topic: “If you were your hair, write a letter to yourself about what makes you feel sad, angry, afraid and loved. Also write about what you would like to change?”
    • Letters will be judged on spelling, grammar, creativity, content, and structure.
  • Third -Fifth Form or Year students in High School
    • Each student must submit a 200-250 word essay, typed in English, on the topic: “All About My Hair Relationship”
    • Essays must be typed double spaced (Times New Romans font; 12pt. as the font size). The student’s name, school and page number must be inserted at the header or top of page.
    • Essays will be judged on spelling, grammar, creativity, content and organization.
    • The essays should be emailed to dontbreakthecomb@gmail.com by April 10, 2018.
  • The letter or essay entry by the teachers of participating classes is OPTIONAL.
    • The teachers must submit his or her letter or essay following the guidelines for his or her class.
    • This entry must include teacher’s name and occupation (e.g. “Social Studies Teacher of …” or “Fourth Grade Teacher”).  
Entries must include a cover page with the following information:  Name of Participant, Contact Information of Participant, and Participant’s Grade (* or Occupation for participating teachers), Name of School, Name of Principal, School’s Address, Email, Telephone Number, and Date.
